Start with what is not here
None of the 13 approved schools in the five parishes is classified by the federal survey as a special education school. A Lake Charles family whose child needs specialized support is therefore usually combining a mainstream private seat with outside services, or building a home-based program around therapy and tutoring. LA GATOR is unusually well suited to both, because the marketplace pays licensed providers directly.
How the IDEA amount is set
The award for a student with a disability under IDEA is tiered by the level of services the student needs and is higher for households at or below 250% of the federal poverty level, topping out at $15,253. Two consequences matter locally. The amount can exceed a parish elementary school's tuition, leaving money for therapy on top. And IDEA students are in the second priority group, so in a year like 2026-27, when the program could not fund everyone, the designation often decides whether a new applicant is funded.
Documentation is the hurdle. A current IEP from a Louisiana public school is the simplest proof. A child who has always been in private school or at home will usually need an evaluation first, and an evaluation can itself be bought through the marketplace once an account exists.
What the marketplace covers for these students
- Licensed therapy: speech-language, occupational, physical and behavioral therapy, counseling and audiology.
- Instruction: structured-literacy and dyslexia intervention, math tutoring and test preparation.
- Assessment: educational and psychological evaluations and exam fees, with AP exams capped at $100.
- Courses: full curricula, online classes, and dual enrollment through McNeese State or SOWELA for older students.
- Devices: a computer or tablet and software within the program's limits.
Each purchase has to go through Odyssey to a registered provider. The program does not reimburse families for anything bought outside the platform, and that is the mistake that costs Southwest Louisiana families the most in their first year. If your child's therapist is not registered, ask whether they will register before you schedule a session against the account.
A choice you have to make
A student cannot hold LA GATOR and Louisiana's older School Choice Program for Certain Students with Exceptionalities at the same time. If your child has the older scholarship, compare the amounts and ask the school which it prefers before you give one up.
Questions for a mainstream school
- Who provides support here: a certified specialist, an aide, or the classroom teacher?
- May an outside therapist work with my child on campus during the day?
- How will you measure progress if my child does not take the standard tests?
- Have you enrolled an IDEA-funded student and billed the account successfully?
Questions for a therapist or tutor
- Are you registered in the Odyssey marketplace, and for which services?
- What do you charge per session and how many sessions do you expect over the year?
- Will you bill the account directly?
